A Delicious Tribute to the Afterlife

Beyond the traditional customs of altars, offerings, and parades, Dia de los Muertos — or Day of the Dead — offers travelers a unique opportunity to explore Mexico’s rich culinary heritage. It is a vibrant and meaningful celebration that honors the lives of loved ones who have passed away. At Pueblo Bonito Resorts, this special occasion is celebrated with a special culinary program that showcases the holiday’s classic flavors and traditions.

As the sun begins to set on Saturday, November 2nd, the atmosphere at Pueblo Bonito Resorts transcends with a spirit of reverence and celebration. The culinary team at each resort has carefully curated a series of gastronomic experiences in honor of this special occasion.

At Pueblo Bonito Montecristo Estates, guests can indulge in a three-course dinner featuring traditional Mexican ingredients like amaranth seeds, pumpkin seeds, and mashed sweet potato. The meal is accompanied by a special Day of the Dead drink based on cempasúchil flowers and live music by Luna Itzel.

For those seeking a more intimate experience, LaFrida at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach proposes a special evening inspired by the restaurant’s famed namesake: Frida Kahlo. Chef Anaisa Guevara, recently named “Best New Chef 2024” by Food & Wine magazine, presents a menu that pays homage to the legendary artist, complete with marigold flowers, candles, skulls, altars, and food that pays tribute to Kahlo.

The celebration extends beyond the dining room at Sunset Beach, as guests get to enjoy a folkloric dance show and Catrines and Catrinas parading to the sound of “La Llorona.’ An altar contest, traditional Mexican bites, and live mariachi music add to the festive atmosphere.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, the adults-only Pueblo Bonito Pacífica is presenting “Welcome to Mictlan” for the third consecutive year. This event is a fusion celebration of pre-Hispanic cultures. The event features a blessing ceremony, an artisan market, and an altar created by the team at Pueblo Bonito. Guests will also be treated to a delicious Mexican buffet on the beach with live rock music and a DJ, and the various hotel departments will organize a parade of alebrijes. These artistic renditions of fantastical spirit creatures feature vibrant colors and intricate patterns and are said to guide, protect, and accompany people throughout their lives.

Over at Pueblo Bonito Rosé, a unique blend of stunning ocean views and traditional Mexican cuisine are on offer at the Sunset & Sushi deck. Alternatively, you can enjoy a meal at Mare Nostrum Restaurant, where you can admire iconic Day of the Dead symbolism as you dig into a traditional Mexican buffet. Browse the several altars on display and then cast a vote for your favorite one.

Rosé and other hotels along El Médano Beach will also be participating an Pan de Muerto exhibition and tasting on the beach during the first week of November. The event will include Day of the Dead altars with themed décor, and “panes de muertos” (Day of the Dead breads) and traditional beverages, such as tepache and atole, will be available for tastings.

Across the sea in Mazatlán, Casa 46 takes guests on a culinary journey through Mexico with dishes from the various states where Dia de los Muertos is celebrated most fervently. The wide array of flavors complements the exquisite dresses of the skull-faced Catrinas and the stunning altar set up and decorated in honor of the deceased.

At Pueblo Bonito Mazatlán, the resort will be decked in the day’s most decorative touches, and guests at Palomas Restaurant can enjoy the detail of the great altar set up there along with the delightful buffet of Mexican snacks, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), and chocolate.

Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay will host a very family-friendly party with a piñata and pyrotechnics for the kids — and kids at heart — and a welcome cocktail for the adults, as well as a full Mexican buffet. La Cordeliere restaurant will feature an altar dedicated to renowned Mexican personalities along with Day of the Dead décor, and a live guitarist. Our gala team will also dress in full Catrina regalia as part of the celebrations.
