Embracing the Tides of Change: World Water Day
In 1993, the United Nations designated March 22nd as the day when we as a planet would celebrate water and raise awareness about communities that are vulnerable to water-related issues, such as scarcity and contamination. It’s also a day for us to actively think about how we intend to manage water for future generations. The theme of World Water Day 2024 is Leveraging Water for Peace, an idea that urges individuals, communities, and organizations to consider how this resource impacts every aspect of human life, focusing on the critical role water plays in the stability and prosperity of the world. Taking time to observe and participate in this kind of conservation inspires those around us to make a positive impact.
With most of our properties nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, Pueblo Bonito Resorts has always felt a deep connection with water. Recognizing our role as stewards of one of Earth's most vital resources, we have championed sustainability and woven environmentally conscious practices into the fabric of how we run our resorts and the guest experience. Starting with conservation and an effort to reduce waste that often ends up in our oceans, Pueblo Bonito relies on a robust solid waste program that recycles food, paper, plastic, glass, metals, and hazardous chemicals. All organic waste is turned into compost fertilizer for our gardens. We are proud to say we have minimized our refuse, sending the least amount of trash to local dumps.
Our ongoing sustainability efforts are exemplified by the protection of one of the ocean's most endearing creatures: the sea turtle. Pueblo Bonito’s Turtle Protection and Adoption Program allows guests to participate in safeguarding the future of these iconic marine creatures. The program’s activities range from nest protection to the release of hatchlings, turning vacation experiences into a legacy of environmental inspiration for those who are committed to making a difference, those who hadn’t really thought about their role, and those whose young minds will foster future change. Far from being a program about a single animal, our partnership with the Marine Turtle Protection Program helps protect turtles and also whales, pichichi ducks, brown pelicans, white tail doves, and black iguanas throughout Los Cabos, Mazatlán, and the Sea of Cortez.
Our resorts further cement their commitment to the environment with a series of initiatives designed to foster a green mindset among guests and staff alike. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive approach to sustainable living that Pueblo Bonito promotes daily, and include reducing plastic use, implementing water-saving measures, and conserving the vibrant biodiversity that surrounds each property.
Pueblo Bonito's dedication to sustainability extends beyond annual events to our wellness offerings, designed to rejuvenate not only the body and mind but also the planet. The Armonía Spa is a sanctuary where treatments are aligned with sustainable practices, utilizing many organic and locally sourced ingredients to minimize environmental impact. Wellness activities in nature, such as guided meditation at sunrise and yoga sessions by the sea, immerse guests in our ecology and highlight the symbiotic relationship between well-being and nature conservancy.
Water, being central to wellness, is revered and conserved in every aspect of our resorts’ operations. From utilizing eco-friendly laundry systems that reduce water usage to implementing advanced wastewater treatment facilities that ensure the water's return to nature is safe and clean, Pueblo Bonito's resolve in water conservation is unwavering.
At the core of Pueblo Bonito's ethos is the belief that the luxury hospitality experience should be synonymous with eco-consciousness and sustainability. The activities across our resorts on World Water Day and beyond reflect a commitment to inspiring change and influencing our communities to value and protect our natural water sources.
World Water Day is a testament to a global effort to recognize the importance of something that we can easily take for granted when we have it: Water — the lifeblood of our planet.
