Pueblo Bonito: Where Human Resources Matter

Since its inception more than 35 years ago, Pueblo Bonito Resorts has prided itself as a great place to work.

CEO Alberto Ernesto Coppel believes that vision and determination are behind the success of the hospitality firm, which started with a single hotel in Mazatlán and has since become a dominant player in the Los Cabos hotel and real estate market.

“I have to thank a lot of talented people for continually taking everything to another level,” Coppel said. “It’s more than what we could have dreamed of, and it just keeps getting better.” And bigger. In 1987, Pueblo Bonito employed 185 people. At present, the company employs nearly 4,500 people.

From the beginning, Coppel felt he needed to give back to the community to achieve true success. Through his family’s foundation, Coppel says, “We support first and foremost our employees, to help them improve their lives. We have improved our employees’ educational opportunities and language training so they can develop themselves to their full potential.

“We’ve found that if we care for our employees, our guests will feel the warmth,” Coppel explained. “We want them to feel welcome and at home so that they return and return again. At Pueblo Bonito Mazatlán, we have employees that have been with us since the beginning. That kind of longevity is how we’ve been able to grow.

“I always kept that in mind that the combination of top-class facilities and a high standard of service would pay off, and we have continued with that concept throughout the growth of the company,” Coppel declared.

What does Pueblo Bonito Resorts specifically do for its staff members? The Human Resources department excels at exactly that, providing resources for the hardworking men and women in the company. The company’s cultural practices include:

  • Our Pueblo Bonito University, which offers:
    • Educational programs for staff members who did not have the opportunity to finish general education curriculums.
    • Undergraduate level programs—to date, 73 collaborators have graduated; seven have earned administration degrees. Each participant gets a 50% scholarship. A total of 263 scholarships have been awarded since 2018.
  • An Integral Development Center (CDI), which offers resources for staff to help with improving mental wellbeing. This includes individual, group and growth sessions that cover mindfulness, human development, addiction prevention and wellness.
  • A culture strongly based on Diversity and Inclusion. Pueblo Bonito embraces these philosophies throughout all areas of its operations, relying on an Inclusion Diversity Committee to help implement, oversee, and enforce policies.
